Silent Witness season 29 features returning leads and new guests

The BBC forensic crime drama Silent Witness has begun its 29th season with the core team relocating from London to Birmingham. Emilia Fox and David Caves reprise their roles as married pathologists Nikki Alexander and Jack Hodgson, joined by Maggie Steed and Francesca Mills. The season introduces fresh guest stars across its episodes.

Silent Witness returned for season 29, marking a significant shift as the Lyell Centre team moves to a new forensics facility in Birmingham. The main cast remains intact, with Emilia Fox portraying Dr. Nikki Alexander, a curious and skilled pathologist who joined the team in 2004. David Caves plays Jack Hodgson, her husband and colleague, described as straight-talking and instinctive. The pair married in a simple ceremony at the end of season 28, following a kiss in season 24 and evolving relationship in subsequent years.

Emilia Fox discussed Nikki's approach to marriage, telling Radio Times: "I don't think she was reticent about Jack at all. I think she was reticent about what marriage means – how one makes that commitment, and whether you do it with all the pomp and ceremony of a big wedding, or choose something more intimate." She added that the series explores how scientists handle emotions, with the couple settling into their new life in Birmingham.

David Caves noted Jack's growth: "Jack and Nikki are settling into a new home in Birmingham and getting used to The Bowman Centre, trying to find a bit of balance. Jack is still the same stubborn, sarcastic fella, just with a bit more self-awareness." He teased a personal storyline later in the season that feels "raw - not flashy, just honest."

Maggie Steed returns as Harriet Maven, the team leader who is forthright and loyal. Steed said: "The character has taken a big step to move to another city, Birmingham – which they all have – so they're all a bit apprehensive. She continues to try to do her best for the rest of the team and is fiercely loyal to them."

Francesca Mills plays Kit Brooks, the crime analyst gaining confidence. Mills explained: "This year she really finds her flow and, alongside Jack, their friendship grows and they work really well together in the new building."

The season opens with episodes 1 and 2, "The Disappearance of Alice Hill," featuring Sophie Hopkins as the missing Alice, Dino Fetscher as her husband Jason Webb, and others including Philip Cumbus, Nathan Wright, and Zita Sattar. Episodes 3 and 4, "Creekwood," include Alexander Joseph, David Webber, Lydia Wilson, and Joe Barber. The upcoming episodes 5 and 6, "The Enemy Within," postponed to February 17 and 18, center on a stabbing case with George Harris as victim Alex Nelson, Phaldut Sharma as suspect Hamza Ahmed, and guests like Nikolaos Brahimllari and Selin Hizli.
