Snoop Dogg releases song promoting LGBT families after Lightyear criticism

Snoop Dogg, whose legal name is Calvin Broadus Jr., has collaborated with GLAAD and singer Jeremy Beloate on a new song called 'Love Is Love' for his children's animated series Doggyland. The track, released to promote Spirit Day for LGBT teens, emphasizes diverse family structures. This comes two months after Snoop expressed discomfort with a same-sex couple depiction in the Disney film Lightyear.

The 53-year-old rapper announced the release of 'Love Is Love' in the latest episode of Doggyland on YouTube. The song features animated dogs, including one voiced by Snoop and a new character voiced by Beloate, a contestant from The Voice. Lyrics include: “Our parents are different/ No two are the same but the one thing that’s for certain is the love won’t change/ Families are special/ They are so unique/ Everybody’s got a purpose more than what you see/ We love you parents/ We love you so.”

In an interview with Beloate, promoted on GLAAD and Doggyland's Instagram pages, Snoop explained the song's purpose: “It’s teaching parenthood. It’s teaching situations that kids in the world is (sic) going through right now in a beautiful way through song, dance, melody, just trying to get more clarity on how we live and the way we live. And I felt like this music is a beautiful bridge to bringing understanding.” He added, “This is a program we’ve been doing for years where we involve kids. These are things that kids have questions about so now hopefully we can help answer these questions and help them to live a happy life and understand that love is love.” Snoop further stated, “It’s a beautiful thing that kids can have parents of all walks and be shown love, to be taught what love is … being able to have parents from all walks of life, whether it be two fathers, two mothers, whatever it is, love is the key.”

This initiative marks a shift from Snoop's comments in August 2022, when he criticized the inclusion of a same-sex couple in Lightyear after watching it with his grandson. He recounted his grandson asking, “Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!” Snoop responded, “‘Oh sh*, I didn’t come in for this sh. I just came to watch the gdamn movie.’” He described the scene as having “fed me up,” saying, “I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of sh that I don’t have an answer for.” Snoop added, “It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this? … These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”

Following those remarks, many followers expressed anger and accused Snoop of aligning with conservatives, particularly after his performance at a pre-inauguration event for President Donald Trump. An apparent Instagram apology from his account went viral but was denied by his representative as fake. Snoop never issued an official apology.
