Spotify launches Smart Reorder for improved playlist transitions

Spotify has introduced a new feature called Smart Reorder, designed to enhance song transitions in playlists by matching beats per minute and keys. This tool is available exclusively to Premium subscribers and aims to create smoother listening experiences. The announcement comes amid discussions about updates to Apple Music's interface and features.

Spotify's Smart Reorder feature allows users to reorder tracks in a playlist based on their BPM or key, leading to more seamless transitions between songs. To activate it, Premium users can tap Mix on a playlist, select Edit, and choose Smart Reorder. The company highlights examples of effective transitions, such as Bad Bunny's "Safaera" flowing into "EoO," and Sean Paul's "No Lie" into Coldplay's "Adventure of a Lifetime."

This update builds on Spotify's previous efforts to improve song transitions, offering a method beyond simple fading. It assists users in curating playlists with better flow, particularly for those who add tracks but struggle with sequencing.

In comparison, Apple Music's AutoMix, introduced with iOS 26, functions as an upgrade to crossfade by blending songs with strong beats, such as in hip hop and electronic genres. However, it respects album structures, avoiding rearrangements in releases like the Beatles' "Abbey Road," and does not apply to genres like Classical. Some users report issues with AutoMix, including overlapping audio that creates unusual sounds, leading many to disable the feature after initial trials.

Apple Music's upcoming iOS 26.4 update includes other enhancements, such as applying album cover colors to playlist backgrounds for a refreshed design. It also introduces AI-generated playlists based on user preferences, currently limited to the U.S., along with an Upcoming Concerts section to connect fans with artists and a revamped Profile page for easier access to settings and benefits.
