Stamkos overtime goal gives Predators 2-1 win over Penguins

Steven Stamkos scored 44 seconds into overtime to lift the Nashville Predators to a 2-1 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the opening game of the 2025 NHL Global Series Sweden. Filip Forsberg tied the game late in the third period with his team-leading eighth goal. The game took place at Avicii Arena in Stockholm, Sweden, on November 14, 2025.

The Nashville Predators snapped a five-game losing streak with a hard-fought 2-1 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL Global Series opener at Avicii Arena. Pittsburgh struck first in the second period when Evgeni Malkin banked a wrist shot off Michael McCarron's stick and past Juuse Saros at 13:49, giving the Penguins a 1-0 lead on one of their two shots in the frame.

Nashville mounted a comeback in the third. Filip Forsberg, a native of Ostervala, Sweden, tied it at 1-1 with 1:10 left by jumping a face-off win by Sidney Crosby and backhanding the puck from outside the crease. "Obviously, this whole day, (I've) been a little bit nervous," Forsberg said. "It's been a big day. Obviously, couldn't be happier that we were able to get that one through and get a win. That was awesome."

In overtime, Stamkos sealed the victory with a snap shot from the right face-off circle, his fourth goal of the season. "It's one of those games where, like Fil said, you're almost, you know, nervous, anxious," Stamkos said. "You have that extra pep in your step."

Juuse Saros made 16 saves for the Predators, who improved to 6-9-4. Arturs Silovs stopped 28 shots for Pittsburgh, which fell to 9-5-4 after losing three straight. Pittsburgh coach Dan Muse noted issues with details and execution, while Predators coach Andrew Brunette praised the team's commitment. Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson, from Landsbro, Sweden, expressed disappointment in the overall performance.

Nashville denied Pittsburgh on two power plays and stopped two Nashville breakaways, including saves by Silovs on Erik Haula and Justin Barron. The teams meet again Sunday in Stockholm, the 19th NHL regular-season game in Sweden.
