Switch 2 records second fastest US console sales

The Nintendo Switch 2 sold 5.9 million units in the United States during its first 12 months on the market, making it the second fastest-selling console in the country's history. Data from Circana's May 2026 report showed the device outsold all other platforms that month. Meanwhile PlayStation 5 and Xbox hardware sales reached historic lows for the period.

According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, the Switch 2 reached 5.9 million units after one year, trailing only the Game Boy Advance which sold 6.5 million units in its first year. The console led both unit and dollar sales in May and remains the top-selling platform year to date.

PlayStation 5 unit sales fell 58 percent year on year to their lowest May total since 2000, while Xbox hardware recorded its worst May ever with a 12 percent drop. Average prices paid for new hardware rose to $502, up from $440 a year earlier, with PlayStation 5 averaging $672 and Xbox Series models $524.

Microsoft raised Xbox prices on June 25. Nintendo will increase Switch 2 pricing on September 1, following Sony's March increase for PlayStation. Component shortages linked to AI demand continue to drive costs higher, with Microsoft forecasting further doubling by autumn 2027.
