Teachers in MG decide strike starting March 4

Workers in the state education network of Minas Gerais approved an indefinite strike starting March 4 to demand a 41.83% salary adjustment and implementation of the new national floor.

In an assembly held last week in Belo Horizonte, the Sind-UTE/MG union announced that the category will go on strike starting Wednesday, March 4. The decision aims to pressure the state government for a 41.83% salary increase, equivalent to inflationary losses accumulated from 2019 to 2025. Additionally, educators demand the adoption of Ordinance No. 82 from the Ministry of Education (MEC), published on January 30, 2026, which sets the public teaching floor salary for basic education at R$ 5,130.63 for 2026.

The union's general coordinator, Denise de Paula Romano, emphasized during the meeting that the action is vital to address the salary gap. “This measure is necessary given the serious salary shortfall that has reduced our earnings by nearly 42% over the last 8 years,” she stated. Romano also criticized the disregard for annual adjustments in Minas Gerais and pointed to worsening factors such as increased workloads, reduced rights, and precarious working conditions.

“Starting March 4, state schools will be closed,” the coordinator declared, stressing that the stoppage will continue until demands are met. The union includes in the 2026 salary campaign other claims related to economic and educational aspects, aiming to improve professional conditions.
