Tesla has secured a $275 million order for its Megapack battery systems from Matrix Renewables to build a 500 MW/1 GWh energy storage facility in Eccles, Scotland. This marks Matrix's first standalone battery project in the UK and aims to enhance grid flexibility and renewable energy integration. The deal underscores growing demand for large-scale storage solutions amid the UK's clean energy transition.
Tesla's energy division has achieved a significant milestone with a $275 million contract from Matrix Renewables for a 500 MW/1 GWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Eccles, Scotland. Announced on December 22, 2025, the full engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) agreement positions the project along key transmission corridors between Scotland and England, where it will provide essential grid flexibility, improve system resilience, and facilitate greater integration of renewable sources like wind and solar.
All planning conditions for the Eccles site have been discharged, securing full consent for construction to begin. For Matrix Renewables, this represents its inaugural standalone BESS project in the UK and a key part of its European expansion. The company aims to develop up to 3 GW of additional capacity in the coming years. Tesla's Megapack technology, designed for grid-scale applications, stores vast amounts of energy and dispatches it as needed to balance demand and support intermittent renewables. The deal leverages Tesla's advanced energy management software for real-time grid balancing and predictive analytics.
