The Temper Trap announces 'Sungazer', first album in a decade

The Temper Trap has revealed details of its first album in a decade, Sungazer, due out on July 10. Rolling Stone exclusively announced the news after the band's hiatus since Thick as Thieves in 2016. Members pursued individual projects before reuniting across continents.

The Temper Trap, known for 2010s hits like “Sweet Disposition” and “Love Lost,” stepped away from the spotlight after touring for Thick as Thieves. Lead singer Dougy Mandagi relocated to Berlin and later Indonesia, immersing himself in electronic music. Drummer Toby Dundas opened a recording studio and scored films, bassist Jonathon Aherne issued a solo project from America, and guitarist Joseph Greer focused on teaching. The band tentatively returned to the studio after a four-year break from touring and writing, collaborating remotely before sessions in Melbourne. “With time apart and much personal growth from us all, Sungazer feels like it’s captured the most pure collection of music we’ve ever made,” the band said in a statement. “We had more fun making this record and in the writing room than on any of the previous records we’ve done. We’re in a great place creatively and in our friendships, we’re closer than ever. Being back into the studio together really felt like coming home.” The announcement follows news of the band's summer support slot on Muse's North American tour and a Jimmy Kimmel Live! performance of single “Giving Up Air.” Singles “Into The Wild” and “Lucky Dimes” have previewed the album, with title track “Sungazer” set for release Wednesday evening. Mandagi described “Sungazer” as a tribute to his son Ziggy, written as a pre-birth promise to be with him through life.
