Three suspects investigated for wildlife poisoning in Poyang Lake

Police in Jiangxi province have detained three individuals suspected of poisoning wild animals in the Poyang Lake wetland area. The action follows reports from volunteers about suspected incidents at a site in the lake basin. Authorities have pledged zero tolerance for offenses threatening ecological security.

On Monday, Yugan county's public security bureau revealed the detention of three individuals—identified by surnames Zhou, aged 57, and two others aged 69 and 50—suspected of poisoning wild animals in the Poyang Lake wetland area.

The probe started after volunteers reported suspected wildlife poisoning on Saturday at a wetland site within the Poyang Lake basin. Police then formed a special investigation team with forestry authorities to inspect the locations.

The suspects have been placed under criminal coercive measures, and the case remains under investigation.

Authorities stressed that protecting the ecology and wildlife of Poyang Lake is a shared responsibility, promising a "zero-tolerance" approach to offenses harming ecological security.

Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake, is one of the most crucial wintering grounds along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway for migratory birds. Each year, numerous birds stop there to rest, feed, and survive the winter, making its wetlands vital for global bird conservation and ecological balance on this international route.
