Tunisia faces Uganda in Africa Cup of Nations opener

Tunisia meets Uganda in the final Group C match on Tuesday evening, as both teams aim to stake a claim for a knockout spot. The Carthage Eagles seek to end a recent winless streak at the tournament, while the Cranes return after a long absence. Confirmed lineups feature experienced players from both sides.

The Africa Cup of Nations 2025 kicks off with Tunisia hosting Uganda in Group C at 20:00 GMT on December 23. Nigeria, the group favorites, play earlier, leaving second place open for Tunisia or Uganda to challenge.

Tunisia enters their 22nd finals appearance and 17th consecutive since 1994, a tournament record. They failed to win any of their three matches in 2023, drawing two and losing one—the first such blank since 2010. Their last opening-game victory came in 2013 with a 1-0 win over Algeria, followed by two draws and three losses. Only one of their last six AFCON games has been a win, a 2021 round-of-16 defeat of Nigeria.

The starting XI for Tunisia includes goalkeeper Dahmen, defenders Varely, Bronn, Talbi, and Abdi, midfielders Mejbri, Saad, and Skhri, and forwards Sassi, Mastouri, and Achouri.

Uganda makes their eighth finals appearance, returning since 2017 after a 39-year gap. Their best result was a 1978 final loss to Ghana, 2-0. Five of their last seven opening matches ended in defeat, with wins in 1978 over Congo (3-0) and 2019 over DR Congo (2-0). None of Uganda's 23 AFCON games have finished goalless. Goalkeeper Onyango played all six matches in 2017 and 2019.

Uganda's lineup features Magoola in goal, defenders Sibbick, Torach, Obita, and Kayondo, midfielders Semakula, Lorenzen, and Aucho, and attackers Ssemugabi, Mukwala, and Mato.
