Tunisia to face Japan under new coach Renard at World Cup

Herve Renard takes charge of Tunisia for the first time when they meet Japan in their second Group F match at the 2026 World Cup on Sunday. The 57-year-old replaced Sabri Lamouchi, who was dismissed after a 5-1 defeat to Sweden.

Renard previously led Saudi Arabia at the 2022 tournament and has now coached four different nations at the finals. He told reporters the role presents a motivating challenge and urged his players to focus on their own performance rather than Japan’s strengths.

Japan will be without Takefusa Kubo due to a knee injury. The match kicks off at 5:00am UK time and will be shown on BBC One.

Tunisia need positive results in their remaining games to keep alive hopes of reaching the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams. Japan drew 2-2 with the Netherlands in their opener.

The fixture marks the 1,000th game in World Cup history.
