Uganda and Kenya lead African Schools Chess Championship

Uganda's Sr. Miriam Duggan Primary School and Kenya's Moi Nyeri Complex Primary School share the lead after six rounds at the African Continental Stage of the FIDE ISCF World Schools Team Championship in Stellenbosch. Five teams trail by two points with two rounds left. The event combines competition with educational workshops.

After rounds five and six at the Coetzenburg Center, the leaders each hold 10 match points. Kenya defeated Madagascar's Lycée Privé Hibiscus 3½-½, while Uganda beat Zimbabwe's Budiriro 4 Primary School 3-1. Angola drew 2-2 with Uganda in round six, where unrated Melquesideque Paulo defeated top-rated Ronald Wabwire.

Kenya also drew 2-2 with Welgemoed. Five teams sit on eight points: Madagascar, Angola, Welgemoed, Holy Cross and Namibia. Rounds seven and eight are scheduled to decide the champions and qualifiers for the December Grand Final.

Twelve-year-old Ronald Wabwire, rated 2174, said of the event: "This is the best event I have ever been to". Zimbabwe's all-girls team from Sengwa Primary School secured a 3-1 win over Malawi in round five. Side events included workshops on raising champions and breaking stereotypes through chess.
