Vogue and CFDA unveil reimagined flags at Rockefeller Center

Designers gathered Monday evening at The Rink at Rockefeller Center in New York City to debut 130 reimagined flags honoring every U.S. state and territory. The installation marks a joint project by Vogue and the CFDA with America250 to celebrate the nation's 250th anniversary.

Prominent designers including Michael Kors, Vera Wang, Tommy Hilfiger, and Tory Burch posed for a group portrait in front of the flags. The project involved more than 100 designers reinterpreting the flags, with some states receiving multiple creative versions.

Prabal Gurung, vice chair of the CFDA, said the evening celebrated creativity and community. “At the end of the day, our job as creators is to make people feel seen,” he said. “That's what we’re doing today—gathering everyone in solidarity and in celebration of joy.”

CFDA Chairman Thom Browne opened remarks by calling the display “pure American.” Anna Wintour thanked the designers and noted the project had been in development for over a year and a half. The event concluded with a performance of “America the Beautiful” by Broadway stars Christiani Pitts and Sam Tutty.

The flags will remain on view through Sept. 4.
