Beaver rescued outside Uppsala Cathedral using moving box

A beaver was found disoriented outside Uppsala Cathedral on Thursday morning and rescued using a moving box and blanket. It was then released into Fyrisån near Gotlandsparken. Henrik Viberg from the Church of Sweden said the animal was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Church workers at Uppsala Cathedral encountered an unexpected visitor on Thursday morning while tending to the grounds outside. They spotted a furry beaver that appeared lost. The animal had likely wandered up from the nearby Fyrisån river.

After consulting police and the county administrative board, a rescue operation began. Staff used a moving box and blanket to capture the beaver. “We herded the beaver into the box and made sure it was comfortable,” said Henrik Viberg, communicator for the Church of Sweden.

The beaver was transported from the cathedral across S:t Olofsbron bridge to Gotlandsparken, where it was released into the wild. “It’s not uncommon for beavers to venture outside the river, but this one seems to have been caught by the morning light and stayed put. We’re just glad it all ended well,” Viberg added.
