Edward Cabrera set to return from injured list Friday

The Chicago Cubs expect right-hander Edward Cabrera to be activated from the 15-day injured list on Friday. He will start against the San Francisco Giants at Wrigley Field.

Cabrera has been sidelined since May 21 with a blister on his right middle finger. Manager Craig Counsell said the rest could help the pitcher prepare for the remainder of the season. Cabrera posted a 4.00 ERA with 47 strikeouts in 54 innings this year before the injury. He had a 3.27 ERA in his first seven starts but struggled with a 6.39 ERA in his three outings leading up to placement on the list. Counsell also expressed optimism about left-hander Matthew Boyd, who is scheduled to make another minor league rehab start on Saturday after undergoing knee surgery in May.
