Government appoints inquiry for more shooting ranges

The government wants to build more civilian shooting ranges in Sweden and has appointed an inquiry to improve conditions. The number of ranges has decreased over the past ten years, creating problems for total defense and sport shooting.

The government today presented an inquiry to examine how the number of shooting ranges can increase. Minister for Civil Defense Carl-Oskar Bohlin (M) stressed that closures of ranges do not align with the growth of total defense.

Pia Clerté, sport shooter and commentator, will be the special investigator. She will review regulations to make them more appropriate and predictable while ensuring safety and environmental interests are addressed.

The inquiry is to be reported no later than 31 August next year. It will consider whether municipalities can be required to offer new land when ranges are closed and whether the state should contribute funding.
