As winter fades in Greater New Bedford, Massachusetts, a series of food-focused and cultural events are set to enliven the region this spring. From food truck gatherings to oyster shucking and Portuguese heritage celebrations, locals and visitors can look forward to diverse activities starting in May. These festivals highlight community spirit and local flavors amid longer daylight hours.

Spring arrives in Greater New Bedford with the promise of warmer weather and a packed calendar of events, following a harsh winter of heavy snow and cold snaps. Daylight saving time begins on March 8, offering extended evenings that set the stage for outdoor festivities.

The season kicks off with the New Bedford Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival on May 2, from noon to 5 p.m. at Fort Taber, 1000 S. Rodney French Blvd. Over 30 food trucks will serve various cuisines, paired with craft beers, family games, and live music. Entry costs $5 in advance or $10 at the door.

Memorial Day weekend brings the Lakeside Family Festival to Cathedral Camp Grounds at 157 Middleboro Road in East Freetown. Free admission covers amusement rides, food stalls, games, a classic car show, and a barn sale, fostering a communal atmosphere.

On June 6, the New Bedford Oysterfest at the waterfront features fresh oysters from regional growers, craft beers, cocktails, and live entertainment, organized by Cisco Brewers, Explore New Bedford, and the New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center. Tickets, which include a shucking knife, are $40 presale or $45 on-site.

The Coastal Wine, Cheese & Chocolate Festival follows on June 13 at Westport Fairgrounds, 200 Pinehill Road. This adults-only gathering offers three sessions for sampling local wines, cheeses, and chocolates, with tickets at $60 per person or $25 for designated drivers.

Mid-June highlights include the Day of Portugal festival on June 19-21 at Madeira Field, showcasing Portuguese food, music, folklore, and crafts. The Strawberry Festival caps the month on June 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bandstand on South Main Street in Assonet, featuring strawberry shortcake, vendors, and music, rain or shine.

These events provide relief from cabin fever, emphasizing local aquaculture, heritage, and culinary traditions.
