Utah Mammoths defenseman Sean Durzi has been fined the maximum $5000 by the NHL for headbutting Las Vegas Golden Knights forward Rasmus Andersson during Game 1 of their Stanley Cup playoff series. The Golden Knights rallied from behind to win 4-2, taking a 1-0 series lead. Andersson, a Swedish Olympian, condemned the incident as unfit for hockey.
The incident occurred during a scrum in the first-round playoff matchup between the Las Vegas Golden Knights and Utah Mammoths. Both players received two-minute penalties on the ice, but the league imposed the fine on Durzi afterward for the headbutt, which was visible on replay footage. Andersson told refs immediately after, noting Durzi was not wearing his helmet at the time. Vegas leads the series 1-0 after the 4-2 victory, having overcome deficits of 0-1 and 1-2, with a strong third period performance according to Andersson. Andersson expressed strong disapproval to Hockeynews, saying, 'It doesn't belong in hockey or any sport. It's not something that should happen on a rink.' He added, 'I hope NHL does something about it,' emphasizing the referees had a good view but hoped for further action. Andersson acknowledged the physical nature of playoff hockey as acceptable when reasonable but drew a line at the headbutt. 'A bit sad, and I think the refs were well-positioned but hope NHL addresses it,' he said.
