The NHL has debuted a new YouTube docuseries titled 'My World,' providing fans with behind-the-scenes looks at the lives of hockey's international stars. The latest episode focuses on Colorado Avalanche forward Martin Necas, a native of Nove Mesto na Morave, Czechia, who shares his path to the NHL and excitement for upcoming challenges.
The NHL introduced its 'My World' YouTube series in January, aiming to highlight the personal stories of some of the league's brightest international talents. Each episode offers a glimpse into the players' worlds beyond the ice, with new installments releasing throughout the month.
In the most recent episode, Martin Necas opens up about his lifelong passion for hockey. Growing up in his small hometown, he initially played the sport purely for enjoyment. However, around age 15, he began to see his potential for professional success. "I was just playing hockey for fun," Necas said. "Around the age of 15, I realized I had a shot at the NHL. I did everything possible to make it."
The episode also captures lighter moments, such as Necas attempting to cook a meal of sweet potato and steak for his girlfriend, Nykki. Admitting his culinary shortcomings, he remarked, "I’m so nervous, because I’m so bad at cooking." Despite some kitchen mishaps—like not knowing the location of the cutting board—the dinner turned out well, complete with an extra steak for their dog, Gigi.
Necas reflects on the intensity of international competition, contrasting it with NHL play. He looks forward to representing Czechia at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, where the support will come from an entire nation. "When you play in the NHL, the whole city is cheering for you, but when you play for the national team, the whole country is cheering," he explained. Necas described winning the IIHF World Championship in 2024 as "the best time of my life."
Overall, the forward expresses deep gratitude for fulfilling his childhood dreams. "Dreams you have growing up, making it to the NHL and playing for the national team. For me to be here playing for the Colorado Avalanche with a chance to win, and playing in the Olympics with the Czech team, I’m excited. And I’m super grateful to live my dream," Necas said.
