UEFA has selected German referee Felix Zwayer to officiate Inter's Champions League match against Liverpool at San Siro. Spaniard Alejandro Hernandez will take charge of Atalanta versus Chelsea at the New Balance Arena in Bergamo. Both games kick off on Tuesday, December 9, at 21:00 GMT as part of Matchday 6 in the league phase, with teams battling for automatic qualification spots.
The appointments were announced ahead of two high-stakes fixtures in the UEFA Champions League. For Inter versus Liverpool, Felix Zwayer leads an all-German officiating team. His assistants are Robert Kempter and Christian Dietz, with Martin Petersen as the fourth official. In the VAR room, Soren Storks serves as the video assistant referee, supported by Christian Dingert as assistant VAR.
Zwayer has officiated three Champions League matches this season, issuing a red card in each, including Manchester City 2-0 Napoli and Chelsea 5-1 Ajax. Inter remains unbeaten under Zwayer, recording three wins and a 1-1 draw against PSV Eindhoven. Liverpool has two victories in three games refereed by him, though they suffered a 1-0 loss at Real Madrid in 2023.
Atalanta hosts Chelsea under new coach Raffaele Palladino. Alejandro Hernandez, also from an all-Spanish team, will be assisted by Jose Naranjo and Diego Sanchez Rojo, with Alejandro Muniz as fourth official. The VAR team includes Cesar Soto Grado and Guillermo Cuadra Fernandez.
Hernandez previously oversaw Atalanta's 2-1 Europa League victory away to Sporting CP in October 2023. Chelsea, however, lost 2-1 at home to Legia Warsaw in the Conference League quarter-final under Hernandez in April 2025.
San Siro is expected to be packed for the Inter-Liverpool showdown, creating a charged atmosphere for this pivotal encounter in the race for knockout stage progression.
