Sabres blank Islanders 5-0 in home shutout loss

The Buffalo Sabres defeated the New York Islanders 5-0 on Saturday at UBS Arena, handing the hosts their first shutout loss of the season. Jason Zucker scored twice, while Alex Lyon earned his ninth straight win with 26 saves for Buffalo. Bo Horvat returned from injury but could not spark the Islanders' offense.

The New York Islanders returned from a seven-game road trip but fell flat in a 5-0 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday afternoon at UBS Arena. Buffalo's Jason Zucker scored twice, with Tage Thompson, Rasmus Dahlin on an empty net and Alex Tuch adding goals, while Alex Lyon secured the shutout with 26 saves. David Rittich allowed four goals on 20 shots for New York.

The Islanders generated early pressure, outshooting Buffalo 13-6 in the first period, but two goals were disallowed: Casey Cizikas' for goalie interference and Mathew Barzal's deflection one second after the buzzer. Zucker broke the ice 33 seconds into the second on a rebound from Jack Quinn, followed by Thompson's tap-in with 12 seconds left in the frame on a no-look pass from Zach Benson. Zucker added his second early in the third on a loose puck in the slot, Dahlin sealed it empty-net, and Tuch finished the scoring.

New York's top line of Barzal, Anders Lee and Anthony Duclair sat out the third period amid defensive lapses. Coach Patrick Roy emphasized backchecking: "It’s pretty simple, backchecking is an important part of the game... Mistakes are part of the game, but checking doesn’t require talent. It requires will."

Bo Horvat returned after missing nine games with a lower-body injury, centering the top line with Emil Heineman and Jonathan Drouin. He recorded four shots on goal in 19:20 of ice time and went 14-for-18 on faceoffs. "We did it to ourselves a little bit tonight," Horvat said. "I thought we had a lot of good opportunities to put the puck in the net, we just couldn’t bury them." Roy noted Horvat was rusty initially but played solidly overall.

Isaiah George made his season debut after a Saturday recall, logging 13:56 with Adam Boqvist and blocking one shot. Roy praised his confidence and puck movement. Ryan Pulock remained out day-to-day with an upper-body injury, with Scott Mayfield pairing with Matthew Schaefer. Heineman led the team with six shots.

The loss marks New York's first blank sheet since a 1-0 shootout win over Seattle on Nov. 23. They next visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday at 7 p.m. ET.
