SMHI warns of forest fires across much of Sweden

SMHI warns of high forest fire risk in southern and central Sweden on Friday. The warning covers nearly all of Götaland and Svealand, except western coastal areas. Grass fire risks are also flagged for northern parts over the weekend.

The risk of forest fires is high in southern and central Sweden, warns SMHI. Friday's warning covers nearly all of Götaland and Svealand, except the westernmost coastal areas – from Helsingborg in the south to Strömstad in the north – and extends up to Söderhamn and Bollnäs.

A similar warning is issued for Saturday, with slightly different boundaries. On Saturday, the institute also warns of high or very high grass fire risk in central and northern Norrland. Grass fires are also warned for northern parts over the weekend.

Forest fires can easily start from burning, sparks from machinery or lightning strikes, writes SMHI. Those wishing to light fires should be very careful and first check if there is a fire ban.
