The final days of 2025 look promising with sunny weather across much of Sweden. According to meteorologist Lasse Rydkvist at Klart, sunshine is expected in eastern Norrland and southern Götaland ahead of New Year's Eve, with clear skies along the east coast and northernmost Norrland. Svealand and Götaland will see sub-zero temperatures, creating a chilly but sunny atmosphere.
New Year's Eve could be bitterly cold in the north, however. In Norrbotten, temperatures may drop to 33 degrees below zero, as Rydkvist notes: "It could be a starry clear fireworks sky, but it's freezing cold."
A low-pressure system from the Norwegian Sea will move in during New Year's night, bringing snowfall to large parts of the country. Rydkvist predicts: "It will start snowing already on New Year's night" and "Many will get snow on the first day of the year. It will be real winter weather."
On January 1, 2026, winter intensifies with snow showers from the Baltic Sea, especially in eastern Svealand, Öland, and Gotland. Northern Norrland could see three to four decimeters of snow, which is expected to persist due to the cold. In the Stockholm area, Rydkvist anticipates a few decimeters of snow, while southern Götaland will experience a mix of rain and snow.
Max Lindberg Stoltz at SMHI highlights Gävleborg as particularly affected: "The already hard-hit storm area of Gävleborg is expected to get the largest amounts." Rydkvist also warns of windy conditions accompanying the snowfall, which could approach storm levels and prompt warnings in southern Norrland.
