SVT's Agenda airs AI clip as authentic

SVT's Agenda mistakenly presented an AI-generated video as real during Sunday's broadcast. The clip depicted a New York local police officer berating an ICE agent. Responsible editor Michael Kucera has apologized and promised to review procedures.

During Sunday evening's broadcast of SVT's Agenda, an AI-generated video was presented as authentic footage. The clip, part of a segment on US tensions over deporting undocumented immigrants, showed what appeared to be a New York local police officer yelling at an ICE agent in an urban setting. It highlighted conflicts between the federal ICE force and local police in several Democratic cities.

The clip appeared twice: first in the program's intro and then in the longer US segment. "It is unfortunate that we mistakenly published an AI-generated clip. The audience should always be able to trust that images in Agenda are authentic," says Agenda's responsible editor Michael Kucera to SVT News. He adds: "We are now reviewing our routines to ensure similar errors do not happen in the future."

The broadcast has been temporarily removed from SVT Play. A new version without the erroneous clip will be published soon, along with a textual correction. The incident underscores the challenges of verifying digital material in an era of advanced AI technology.
