Kokkinakis a déclaré que la blessure s'était produite lors des qualifications de l'Open d'Australie en 2019. Il a ressenti une douleur à la poitrine et a plus tard vu le muscle se rétracter et se rompre, ce qui a nécessité une opération chirurgicale inédite dans le monde du tennis.

Le joueur a expliqué que les matchs plus longs provoquent la formation d'une masse remplie de sang au niveau du tissu cicatriciel dans sa poitrine. Il a comparé la sensation à celle d'une balle de golf et a noté que cela affectait toujours son jeu.

À Wimbledon ce mois-ci, Kokkinakis a atteint les demi-finales du double avec Aleksandar Kovacevic après avoir été admis en tant que remplaçant. La paire a battu trois équipes têtes de série avant de s'incliner face aux favoris.

Kokkinakis est actuellement classé 460e et prévoit de se concentrer sur les tournois en simple lors de la tournée nord-américaine sur dur et de l'US Open.
