Trevor Story revives career in strong 2025 season

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story turned around a slow start to deliver one of the most impressive late-season performances in Major League Baseball during 2025. The 33-year-old exceeded 100 games for the first time since 2021, matching career highs with 157 appearances. His resurgence highlighted improvements in plate discipline and power hitting.

Trevor Story's 2025 season marked a significant turnaround for the veteran shortstop in his fourth year with the Boston Red Sox. Entering his 10th MLB campaign, Story struggled early, posting a .582 on-base plus slugging percentage and a 31.6 percent strikeout rate through the first 61 games. A pivotal moment came on June 7 at Yankee Stadium, where he recorded three hits and five RBIs in a 10-7 victory over the New York Yankees.

From that point, over his final 96 games, Story slashed his strikeout rate to 24 percent by chasing fewer pitches outside the zone, dropping from 36 percent to 20 percent. Against pitches in the strike zone post-June 7, he batted .320 with a .570 slugging percentage and 16 home runs, compared to .284, .432 slugging, and seven homers earlier. His power against four-seam fastballs also surged; after batting just .143 with a .156 slugging against them before June 7, he hit .294 with .450 slugging afterward, including his first such home run on June 10 off a 96.1 mph pitch from Tampa Bay's Ryan Pepiot.

Story's hard-hit rate improved from 45.1 percent to 59.1 percent, and his batting average on balls in play rose to .352. He became the only player with at least 18 home runs, 25 doubles, 20 stolen bases, and 70 RBIs after June 6, with 111 hits tying for seventh in MLB. Defensively, he led American League shortstops with 219 putouts and 397 assists, while turning 89 double plays to top baseball.

Story hit 25 home runs for the season—more than his previous three years combined—and stole a career-high 31 bases, ranking sixth in the AL. Having signed a six-year, $140 million deal with Boston in 2022, he opted into the final two years this offseason, signaling confidence in his continued revival.
