Typhoon Bavi approaches southwestern islands, Japan on alert

On Friday, July 10, 2026, Typhoon Bavi neared Japan's southwestern islands, prompting authorities to warn of violent winds, torrential rain, landslides and flooding.

Typhoon Bavi was nearing the Sakishima Islands early Friday with maximum sustained winds of 162 kph. In Ishigaki, residents stocked supplies while some public beaches, coastal parks and the ferry terminal closed.

Airlines cancelled dozens of flights, including for Saturday. Hiroshi Nomura, who runs a bicycle rental store in Ishigaki, said, "I heard that this one will be pretty big. I'm a little concerned about whether our typhoon preparations are enough."

In Taiwan, financial markets closed and more than 1,000 people were evacuated. President Lai Ching-te wrote that although the typhoon weakened, "its storm radius is large and it may still bring strong winds and heavy rain to many areas." TSMC delayed release of its June sales data until Monday.

Bavi is forecast to make landfall late Saturday around the eastern Chinese city of Wenzhou.
