Ambulance service seeks better blue light awareness in traffic

Ambulance staff in Dalarna experience dangerous situations and delays in traffic daily when blue lights approach.

The ambulance service in Dalarna, which also responds to emergencies in northern Västmanland and Gävleborg, is collaborating with Trafikverket to improve blue light awareness among other road users.

– We have received signals that many are unsure how to act when blue lights appear, says Charlotta Redtzer, head of the test unit at Trafikverket Förarprov.

Through the collaboration, input is gathered and integrated into the B driver's license theory section. A new EU directive taking effect in 2029 will make blue lights a separate test point with more questions.

Police in Dalarna and Maskinentreprenörerna have launched a collaboration called Varningdirekt to reduce thefts and crimes against construction companies.

Region Dalarna is dissatisfied with the alarm chain for its ambulance helicopter, which is frequently dispatched on missions that are rejected or aborted. Region councilor Sebastian Karlberg (S) calls it poor use of resources. Despite criteria to reduce false alarms after ten years of operation, cooperation with SOS Alarm remains unsatisfactory.
