Antony Starr cast as lead in Netflix surfing drama Breakers

Antony Starr, known for playing Homelander in The Boys, has been cast as the lead in Netflix's upcoming Australian surfing drama Breakers. The series follows two American backpackers drawn into a surfer community led by Starr's enigmatic character Brando. Production is underway in Western Australia, marking Netflix's first series filmed there.

Antony Starr, the New Zealand-born actor best recognized for his role as the ruthless superhero Homelander in Prime Video's The Boys, has signed on to star in Breakers, a new surfing drama for Netflix. In the series, created by writer Pete Jackson—known for Somewhere Boy—two best friends from the U.S. embark on a backpacking trip in Australia and find themselves pulled into a seemingly idyllic community of surfers. This group is led by a charismatic yet mysterious figure named Brando, whom Starr will portray.

Production on Breakers, also known as Red Bluff, has begun in Western Australia and is scheduled to wrap in June 2026. The project is produced by Clerkenwell Films, a BBC Studios company, in partnership with BBC Studios Productions Australia. Starr joins as an executive producer alongside Jackson and Clerkenwell's Gavin O'Grady, Petra Fried, and Wim De Greef. Directors Mary Nighy (Industry) and Ng Choon Ping (What It Feels Like For A Girl) are helming the series.

This marks Netflix's first original series to be filmed entirely in Western Australia, supported by Screenwest and the Western Australian government through their production incentive program. The show reunites Jackson with Clerkenwell, following their collaborations on the BAFTA-nominated Somewhere Boy for Channel 4 and The Death of Bunny Munro for Sky Atlantic. It also continues Clerkenwell's work with Netflix after the award-winning Baby Reindeer.

Starr recently completed work on the fifth and final season of The Boys, set to premiere on April 8. His other credits include Banshee, American Gothic, and a guest spot on Apple's The Studio. No release date for Breakers has been announced, but it will stream globally on Netflix once production concludes.

Homelander strangled A-Train to death in the woods during the season 5 premiere of The Boys. Jessie T. Usher, who plays A-Train, told TVLine the demise was 'a long time coming' after his character ran out of allies. Co-stars reacted with shock while defending the storyline's bold risks.
