Apple has reintroduced the Slide Over multitasking feature in the second developer beta of iPadOS 26.1, addressing user complaints about its removal in the initial iPadOS 26 update. The change comes after feedback from users on platforms like Reddit who relied on the quick-access window for productivity. While not identical to the original, the new version offers repositioning and resizing options.

In iPadOS 26, Apple overhauled multitasking by introducing new windowed features designed to make iPads function more like traditional laptops. These updates replaced the older Stage Manager system with a more powerful, flexible, and predictable alternative that supports a wider range of iPad models. However, the company removed legacy modes including Split View, which allowed two apps to share the screen with adjustable proportions via a handle, and Slide Over, a small overlay window that could be swiped in and dismissed easily.

Users expressed strong objections to these removals, particularly for Slide Over, which had no direct equivalent in the new system. Although Split View could be approximated, the absence of Slide Over left many feeling limited in their workflow. Responding to this feedback, the second developer beta of iPadOS 26.1 now reinstates Slide Over support, as reported by MacRumors.

The revived Slide Over functions similarly to its predecessor by sitting atop other apps and allowing invocation and dismissal at will. Key differences include support for only one app at a time in the window—unlike the original, which permitted switching between multiple apps—and the ability to reposition and resize it, aligning with iPadOS 26's broader window management.

Apple has not announced a release date for the final iPadOS 26.1, alongside corresponding updates for iOS 26.1 and macOS 26.1. Based on historical patterns, public availability is expected in October or November following additional beta testing.
