Arch Linux 2026.01.01 ISO snapshot released with kernel 6.18 LTS

Arch Linux has released its January 2026 ISO snapshot (2026.01.01), featuring Linux kernel 6.18 LTS for better hardware support, the recently updated Archinstall 3.0.15 installer, and December 2025 package security updates. Ideal for new installations on modern hardware.

Arch Linux kicked off 2026 with the 2026.01.01 ISO snapshot, released on January 1. This first snapshot of the year uses the Linux kernel 6.18 LTS, added to stable repositories last month for improved compatibility with new devices.

It includes Archinstall 3.0.15, released December 31, 2025 (see prior article in this series), which adds rEFInd boot manager support, CUPS printing, COSMIC 1.0 desktop integration, power management options (power-profiles-daemon, tuned), Zram configuration, IWD networking, and more.

The ISO also integrates all official repository updates and security patches from December 2025. NVIDIA users will note a shift to open-source packages (nvidia-open, nvidia-open-dkms, nvidia-lts-open), dropping legacy support for Pascal GPUs like GTX 10xx series due to NVIDIA 590 driver changes.

Download the ISO from the Arch Linux website for fresh installs. Existing systems update via sudo pacman -Syu.

This update includes kernel options, hardware enhancements, and installer improvements to boost performance and compatibility. Existing users can apply changes via a standard system update.

Arch Linux's menu-based installer, Archinstall, has reached version 3.0.15, introducing support for the rEFInd boot manager and other enhancements. Released on December 31, 2025, the update improves installation options for printing, desktops, and power management. It will become the default in the upcoming Arch Linux 2026.01.01 ISO snapshot.

Manjaro Linux has released version 26.0, codenamed Anh-Linh, featuring the Linux 6.18 LTS kernel and updated desktop environments. The update shifts KDE Plasma 6.5 and GNOME 49 editions to Wayland by default, potentially ending X11 sessions for upgraders. Developers recommend the Xfce 4.20 edition for users needing X11 compatibility.

SparkyLinux has unveiled its 2025.12 release, codenamed Tiamat, as a semi-rolling snapshot based on Debian Testing repositories. This version features the Linux 6.17 kernel and supports newer kernel options. It includes updated software like Firefox and Thunderbird, available in multiple desktop editions.

The MX Linux team has released version 25.1 of its Debian-based distribution, restoring dual-init support for systemd and SysVinit on a single ISO. This point update, based on Debian 13.3, includes the Linux 6.12 LTS kernel for standard editions and 6.18 LTS for advanced hardware support. Users can now choose their preferred init system from the live boot menu.

Following the recent Cinnamon 6.6 release, the Linux Mint team has made beta ISOs of Linux Mint 22.3 Zena available for download. Based on Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS, it includes updated Xfce 4.20 and MATE 1.26 desktops alongside Cinnamon 6.6, for testing ahead of the full launch.
