Asian shares sink as Tokyo's Nikkei falls over 4% on AI stock slump

Asian shares skidded on Friday with Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index falling more than 4 percent amid heavy selling of AI-related stocks. Taiwan shares also dropped sharply after TSMC's announcement of additional US investments.

The Nikkei 225 lost 4.03 percent or 2,694.42 points to close at 64,141.12. It briefly fell more than 4,100 points intraday and slipped below 63,000 for the first time in about a month.

Tokyo Electron shares sank 9.3 percent while Advantest tumbled 10.5 percent. SoftBank Group shed 11.4 percent.

In Taiwan shares fell 5.9 percent a day after TSMC announced plans to spend an extra $100 billion on fabrication plants in the United States. TSMC shares dropped 6.1 percent.

Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management noted that investors are taking profits from first-half winners. Other Asian markets including Hong Kong and Shanghai also declined.
