At least 15 people have died in swimming accidents across Germany since Friday during a heatwave. The victims include children, teenagers and adults in various bodies of water.

The deaths occurred in several locations. A 17-year-old was recovered dead on Sunday from a quarry lake in Peine in Lower Saxony. On Saturday a 27-year-old drowned in the Neckar near Heidelberg and a 30-year-old died in a bathing lake near Neuhofen south of Mannheim.

Further incidents were reported from Berlin where two men died in different waters. In North Rhine-Westphalia a six-year-old child died in the Herner Meer on the Rhine-Herne Canal. In Hesse a 40-year-old was recovered dead from the Raunheim forest lake.

Already on Friday a 45-year-old man died in the Seepark Lünen near Dortmund. An eight-year-old boy was recovered dead after a two-hour search from a bathing lake in Isernhagen near Hanover. Two older men drowned in Lake Constance. The heatwave brought temperatures above 40 degrees.

A four-year-old girl died in a drowning accident at Lögarängsbadet in Västerås on Friday evening. She disappeared around 19:30 and was found by divers shortly before 21:00.

The World Health Organization reports that more than 200,000 people in Europe have died from extreme heat since 2022. Most of the deaths could have been prevented, according to the WHO's Europe chief.

Six people died in a shooting Monday at a youth welfare facility in Stade, northern Germany, police said. A suspect is in custody while investigators examine a possible custody dispute.

A child on a bicycle was hit by a car on Saturday evening in Seesen and later succumbed to injuries.
