Bernard Anhwere and Maud Benson win Ghana chess championships

CM Bernard Anhwere and WCM Maud Benson have claimed the top titles at the Ghana National Chess Championship in Accra. The event, organized by the Ghana Chess Association, featured top players from across the country. Top finishers will represent Ghana at the upcoming World Chess Olympiad.

The Ghana National Chess Championship concluded recently in Accra, with CM Bernard Anhwere securing victory in the open category with a score of 7.5 out of 9. Akpa Prince finished second with 6.5 points, followed by FM John Hasford and CM Fomevor Cephas Clinton, both on 5.5 points, and Loglo Daniel with 5 points.

In the ladies category, WCM Maud Benson triumphed with 7 out of 8 points, edging out Ridham who also scored 7 points. WCM Gertrude Banini placed third with 5.5 points, while Dotse Dzidzor Esi scored 5 and Dotse Sumya Ibrahim 4.5.

Bernard Biney Otoo earned the junior championship title through his strong performance, signaling promise for Ghanaian chess. The top five finishers from both categories will compete for Ghana as the Golden Knights at the 46th World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, later this year.

At the closing ceremony, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of the National Sports Authority, praised the organizers, particularly Madam Christiana Ashley, for delivering an exciting tournament. He voiced support for chess, noting the involvement of young players, and committed ongoing backing from the authority.

The Ghana Chess Association thanked arbiters, staff, media, and sponsors such as Mr. Rajan Singh of Cave and Gardens for their contributions to the event's success.
