Brazilians and Argentines vie for dominance in Copa Libertadores

The group stage of the 67th Copa Libertadores edition kicks off on Tuesday, with Brazil and Argentina tied at 25 titles apiece in the tournament's history. Six teams from each nation compete for continental supremacy after Brazil's dominance in the last seven editions.

Brazil and Argentina top the Copa Libertadores historical rankings with 25 titles each, while Independiente from Argentina holds the record with seven. Brazilians have claimed the last seven editions, with Flamengo winning three, Palmeiras two, and Fluminense and Botafogo one each.

The six Brazilian entrants total 11 titles. Flamengo, Brazil's first four-time champion after defeating Palmeiras in last year's Lima final, is in Group A with Estudiantes-ARG, Cusco-PER, and Independiente Medellín-COL. Palmeiras, with three trophies, plays in Group F against Cerro Porteño-PAR, Junior Barranquilla-COL, and Sporting Cristal-PER. Cruzeiro returns in Group D with Boca Juniors-ARG, Universidad Católica-CHI, and Barcelona de Guayaquil-EQU; Corinthians in E with Peñarol-URU, Santa Fé-COL, and Platense-ARG; Fluminense in C with Bolívar-BOL, Deportivo La Guaira-VEN, and Independiente Rivadavia-ARG; debutant Mirassol in G with LDU-EQU, Lanús-ARG, and Always Ready-BOL.

Opening matches feature Fluminense at La Guaira (April 7, 7pm) and Cruzeiro at Barcelona de Guayaquil (April 7, 9pm) on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Flamengo visits Cusco (9:30pm) and Palmeiras faces Junior Barranquilla (9:30pm); Mirassol hosts Lanús (7pm) at home. Corinthians travels to Platense on Thursday (9pm).

The group stage runs until May 28, with the final on November 28 at Estádio Centenário in Montevideo. The champion earns US$25 million, runner-up US$7 million. Broadcasts include Globo, ESPN, Disney+, and Paramount+.
