British eventing selection intensifies ahead of Aachen World Championships

The race for British eventing team places at the 2026 FEI World Championships in Aachen is set to reach a key stage over the next two weeks. Pippa Roome of Horse & Hound outlined the current standings following major spring events. Final decisions will follow performances at upcoming fixtures.

British selection for the eventing at the 2026 World Championships in Aachen will hot up over the next two weeks at Defender Bramham Horse Trials from 11 to 14 June and Luhmühlen Horse Trials from 18 to 21 June. European champions Laura Collett with London 52 and Badminton winners Ros Canter with Lordships Graffalo are considered assured of their places due to their results and records. This leaves two team spots and one individual place open. Tom McEwen and JL Dublin are expected to confirm their spot with a performance in the CCI4*-S at Bramham. Other contenders include Harry Meade on Annaghore Valoner, David Doel on Galileo Nieuwmoed, Gemma Stevens on Flash Cooley and Bubby Upton on Its Cooley Time. Nominated entries meetings for Britain’s squads are set to happen around 22 to 24 June. Definite entries meetings are scheduled around 15 or 16 July.

Britain’s Tom McEwen secured third place in the five-star dressage at the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event with a score of 25.1. Elizabeth Barratt claimed third in the Cosequin Lexington CCI4*-S class scoring 29.7. Both riders praised their horses after tests on 24 April.

Swedish national team captain Henrik Ankacrona has named a shortlist of seven riders and 12 horses for the FEI World Championships in Aachen, scheduled for August 11-23. The list includes former Irish team rider Thomas Ryan, who switched nationalities earlier this year. Reigning world champion Henrik von Eckermann and Olympic gold medalist Peder Fredricson are also included.

The field for the Longines Luhmühlen Horse Trials has been confirmed for the event running from 18 to 21 June. Defending five-star champions Ros Canter and Izilot DHI head a list of 30 starters. The competition takes place eight weeks before the World Eventing Championships in Aachen.

A new privately funded initiative called Rising Lions is supporting three under-25 British event riders to compete in the Cosequin CCI4*-S at the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event from April 23-26. The riders are Elizabeth Barratt, Isabelle Cook and Finn Healy. The programme aims to provide international experience beyond championships.

David Doel moved up to fourth place overall as the leading British rider following the cross-country phase at the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event on April 25. Harry Meade climbed to eighth with Superstition after a dramatic save, while Tom McEwen dropped to sixth. Other British competitors showed mixed results on Derek di Grazia's challenging course.
