Cali activates plan to curb wildlife and flora trafficking

In Cali, the Department of Environmental Management (Dagma) and the Environmental Police have launched the 'Plan Distrito Más Verde' to prevent illegal wildlife and flora trafficking during the year-end season. The operation includes inspections on roads and markets, with seizures already made of irregular wood. Authorities aim to protect key ecosystems and promote legal trade.

The 'Plan Distrito Más Verde' was activated on December 3, 2025, in Cali, focusing on preventing illegal wildlife trafficking during the year-end holidays. The initial operation took place at the CAI Forestal, at kilometer 7 on the road to the sea, where inspections and environmental education activities were conducted for transporters and users of the road corridor.

During this session, authorities seized a shipment of wood from the Pacific coast due to irregularities in the mobilization permit. This action aligns with the Surveillance and Control Policy of Decree 1076 of 2015. So far in 2025, Dagma has seized 164 cubic meters of wood in forms such as planks, beams, and blocks, helping to curb deforestation in areas like the Chocó Biogeographic region and supporting companies with legal and sustainable practices.

Dagma Director Lina Marcela Botía Muñoz stated that the plan covers interventions in markets, pet stores, transport terminals, and road corridors. In these locations, checks will ensure no trade in protected species, such as bushmeat, blue crab, and moss, whose demand rises in December. Cali stands out for having the highest number of forest companies certified by the Ministry of Environment for legal wood management, and Dagma promotes regulatory compliance and responsible trade.

Under Law 2111 of 2021, wildlife trafficking carries prison sentences of 5 to 11 years and fines up to 35,000 current legal minimum monthly wages. For reporting cases, the WhatsApp line 313 780 75 32 is available 24 hours, phone 602 524 05 80 extension 3 during business hours, and email faunasilvestre@cali.gov.co. The campaign aims to bolster ecosystem protection during the Christmas season, encouraging community involvement in preventive measures.
