Mexico City government will enforce an expanded dry law and a security operation with limited capacity at the Angel of Independence during the Mexico vs England round-of-16 match on Sunday, July 5.
The match will kick off at 18:00 at Estadio Ciudad de México, as confirmed by FIFA after ruling out an earlier start due to storms. Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada announced a deployment of 40,000 public servants, including 17,000 police officers, for the game.
The dry law banning takeaway alcohol sales will run from midnight Sunday until 07:00 on Monday, July 6, covering neighborhoods including Centro, Tabacalera, Juárez, San Rafael, Cuauhtémoc, Roma Norte and Condesa. Government Secretary César Cravioto said the zone was expanded because fans bought drinks in nearby areas and carried them into the restricted perimeter.
Following the deaths of four people during celebrations after the win over Ecuador on June 30, authorities set a security perimeter around the Angel of Independence with a maximum capacity of 25,000 people. Attendees will be redirected to other points on Paseo de la Reforma if the limit is reached, and 62 screens will be installed to spread out celebrations.
