Celvia CC gains ISO 17025 accreditation for honey DNA test

Celvia CC has secured ISO 17025 accreditation for its MDA honey test from the Estonian Accreditation Centre. The accreditation confirms the test meets international standards for laboratory competence and reliable results.

The company announced the milestone on June 1. Its MDA test examines the full genetic makeup of honey through metagenomic DNA analysis of samples weighing 100 grams. The process sequences between 1 million and 20 million DNA fragments to detect plant, bacterial, fungal and insect material encountered by bees.

A hybrid population of honeybees in Southern California demonstrates natural resistance to Varroa mites, a major threat to bee colonies. Researchers at UC Riverside found these bees carry 68% fewer mites and require far less chemical treatment. The discovery, detailed in a new study, suggests early-life defenses in larvae may hold the key.

Researchers have analyzed mitochondrial DNA from eight Neanderthal teeth found in Stajnia Cave in Poland, reconstructing the genetic profile of a small group that lived there around 100,000 years ago. The study, published in Current Biology, marks the first such multi-individual genetic picture from a single site north of the Carpathians. The findings show genetic links to Neanderthals across Europe and the Caucasus.
