Chaka Khan and Kelly Rowland honored at Black Women in Music event

Chaka Khan, Kelly Rowland and other Black women in the music industry were recognized at the second annual Black Women in Music event on June 12 in Los Angeles. The gathering celebrated their contributions while highlighting support for breast cancer awareness and mentorship among women.

The event took place at the Audrey Irmas Pavilion and was executive produced by the Connie Orlando Foundation. Honorees included Chaka Khan, who received the Vanguard Award, Kelly Rowland, who was given the Velvet Guard Award, choreographer Fatima Robinson, music executive Natina Nimene, Billboard’s Gail Mitchell and Gender Amplified’s Ebonie Smith.

Connie Orlando, executive vice president at BET, spoke about the importance of uplifting Black women and fighting breast cancer disparities. Chaka Khan delivered an improvised speech about sisterhood and her move to Georgia, while Kelly Rowland was introduced by Tina Knowles and reflected on her Destiny’s Child roots and resilience.

Fatima Robinson accepted the Guardian of Vision Award with remarks on inheriting creativity from her parents. Natina Nimene received the New Guard Award and shared her journey from intern to record executive. Gail Mitchell and Ebonie Smith were spotlighted for their roles in journalism and production.

The evening featured performances by Chanté Moore, David Michael Wyatt and violinist Yuli. It was hosted by comedian Zainab Johnson and supported by partners including HarbourView, Amazon Music and Universal Music Group.
