Channel 4 introduces its epic rags-to-riches series A Woman of Substance, based on Barbara Taylor Bradford's best-selling 1970s novel. The drama traces Emma Harte's path from a penniless maid in the Yorkshire countryside to an influential international businesswoman. Viewers first encounter the 79-year-old Emma at the peak of her achievements, before flashbacks reveal her early struggles at Fairley Hall.
Brenda Blethyn portrays the elder Emma Harte, the resilient heroine who defies class barriers. Known for her role as DCI Vera Stanhope in ITV's Vera, Blethyn has earned a BAFTA and Golden Globe for Secrets & Lies, and appeared in films like Saving Grace, Pride & Prejudice, and Little Voice.
Jessica Reynolds plays the young Emma, a seamstress facing scorn from the Fairley family. Reynolds debuted in the comedy-drama My Left Nut in 2020 and has since featured in Outlander, Netflix's House of Guinness, and the 2024 film Kneecap.
The Fairley family features prominently: Emmett J. Scanlan as the commanding Adam Fairley, heir to the estate; Leanne Best as his wife Adele; Ewan Horrocks as the charming youngest son Edwin, who romances young Emma; Lydia Leonard as Olivia Wainwright, Adele's sister with feelings for Adam; and others including Toby Regbo as Jim Fairley and Harry Cadby as Gerald Fairley.
Emma's family includes Will Mellor as her struggling father Jack Harte, known from Coronation Street and Broadchurch; Lenny Rush as her brother Frank, seen in The Dumping Ground and Doctor Who; and Sophie Bould as Elizabeth Harte. Additional cast members are Niall Wright as Mac, Robert Wilfort as Murgatroyd, Hiftu Quasem as Priya Chandra, and Georgina Sadler as Polly.
Many actors bring experience from high-profile projects: Scanlan from Hollyoaks and Peaky Blinders; Best from Line of Duty and Star Wars: The Force Awakens; Leonard from The Crown and Gentleman Jack; and Rush, at 16, from Am I Being Unreasonable? The series premieres tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm.
