Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong recently delivered furniture to a displaced family in temporary housing following the November fire at Wang Fuk Court.
A 69-year-old resident surnamed Ho and her daughter received new items including a shoe cabinet, foldable desk and wardrobe. They have lived in a 100 sq ft flat in Hung Shui Kiu for six months after the November 26 fire killed 168 people and displaced 5,000 residents from the Tai Po estate. Ho said they had avoided buying furniture because they expected to purchase a new home under a government buy-back plan. “Buying [furniture] costs money and we don’t know how long we will live here,” she said. The visit was part of initiatives by Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong and Tai Po Baptist Church Social Service to support survivors through Operation Santa Claus.
