Colin Cowherd stated this week that the Pittsburgh Steelers stand apart from the rest of the NFL because they retain coaches and general managers despite limited playoff success.
Cowherd made the comments on his show The Herd. He noted that 31 of 32 teams fire leaders who fail to deliver big postseason wins, citing Sean McDermott's departure from the Buffalo Bills as an example.
The Steelers have kept the same approach for decades. The team has had only three head coaches since 1969, each of whom left on their own terms. Longtime general manager Kevin Colbert also departed voluntarily in 2022.
Mike Tomlin coached the Steelers through multiple winning seasons but recorded no playoff victories in his final nine years. He resigned after the 2025 season. Mike McCarthy has since taken over as head coach.
Cowherd argued that the organization's preference for stability over quick changes sets it apart from league norms.
