Disney+ acquires Shaunagh Connaire's directorial debut 'Brown Bread'

Disney+ has picked up the Irish short film 'Brown Bread,' marking the narrative directorial debut of journalist Shaunagh Connaire. The film, which premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh in 2025, is now streaming across Disney+ platforms in Europe. It explores family tensions through an emigration story inspired by Connaire's personal experiences.

Shaunagh Connaire, a two-time Emmy-nominated Irish journalist known for producing documentaries for the BBC and PBS Frontline, has transitioned to narrative filmmaking with 'Brown Bread.' Previously serving as communication director for George and Amal Clooney’s Foundation for Justice, Connaire wrote and directed the short, describing it as a “modern twist on the Irish emigration story.”

The story centers on Áine, played by Katie McGrath—known for roles in “Merlin” and “Supergirl”—who returns from New York to Ireland for her godmother’s memorial mass. This visit stirs up old family tensions, grief, and unspoken affection in her rural home. Fionnula Flanagan, an Emmy-winning actress from “Lost” and “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” portrays Áine’s emotionally restrained mother Betty. Dermot Crowley, recognized from “Luther: The Fallen Sun” and “The Death of Stalin,” plays her father Seamus.

Inspired by Connaire’s own inability to travel from the U.S. to attend her godmother’s funeral, the film was shot entirely in her hometown of Longford, Ireland. Produced by Julie Ryan via MK1 Studios, it received funding from Creative Ireland (Longford) and support from associate producers Sam and Amelia Dennigan and Anne Heraty. Network Ireland handles distribution.

Connaire expressed delight at the acquisition: “Having my first scripted film acquired by Disney so early in its life is so wonderful. I wanted to tell a story rooted in Irish life but expansive enough to travel. To see that belief reflected in a global acquisition like this is incredibly affirming, and a reminder that small, specific stories can resonate far beyond where they begin.”

Producer Ryan praised the project: “From the outset, we felt Brown Bread was a very special film, not because it was trying to be big, but because it was precise, truthful and emotionally brave. We were always thinking globally, and Shaunagh has an extraordinary instinct for character and tone that allows stories rooted in place to travel. Seeing a film made in rural Longford now finding a home with Disney reinforces our belief that stories rooted in Irish life can resonate well beyond their place of origin.”

Following its world premiere at the 2025 Galway Film Fleadh, the film’s festival run led to this Disney+ deal, highlighting the platform’s interest in international shorts.
