Eddie Redmayne to star in Hirokazu Kore-eda's next Searchlight film

Searchlight Pictures has acquired Hirokazu Kore-eda's next English-language project, with Eddie Redmayne set to star and produce. The untitled drama, written by the director, marks another collaboration in Kore-eda's international work following his acclaimed films. Details on the plot remain undisclosed.

Searchlight Pictures has partnered with acclaimed Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda on his forthcoming English-language feature, enlisting Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne to lead the cast and serve as a producer. The project, which Kore-eda is also writing, will be produced by Jonathan King and Ash Sarohia alongside Redmayne, with Joyce Jun and Kaoru Matsuzaki as executive producers.

This untitled drama continues Kore-eda's expansion into English-language cinema after his 2019 French film The Truth and his 2022 Korean feature Broker. His 2018 family drama Shoplifters earned the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, served as Japan's Oscar submission, and received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Kore-eda has also directed Netflix series such as The Makanai and Asura, with his recent films Monster and the upcoming Sheep in the Box adding to his diverse portfolio.

Redmayne, known for roles in films like The Theory of Everything and The Danish Girl, brings his growing producing experience to the project. He recently executive produced and starred in the Peacock/Sky series The Day of the Jackal, which became Sky's biggest new series launch and topped Peacock's charts during its debut week. The series garnered Golden Globe and Critics' Choice nominations for Best Drama Series, with Redmayne receiving individual nods for his performance.

On stage, Redmayne initiated the West End revival of Cabaret, earning a Best Actor in a Musical Olivier Award in 2022. The production transferred to Broadway, securing nine Tony Award nominations. Redmayne's next film role is in Warner Bros.' Panic Carefully opposite Julia Roberts.

Redmayne is represented by CAA, United Agents, and Jackoway Austen, while Kore-eda is repped by M3 Global Strategy. No release date or further plot details have been announced.
