Egypt seeks fairer global financing at Paris Forum

Egypt's finance minister called for a fairer international financing system at the Paris Forum to support developing economies.

Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk stated that emerging markets need unified efforts to create a financial architecture more supportive of growth and investment.

He highlighted innovative tools such as debt-for-investment swaps and debt exchanges to generate fiscal space for human development and social protection programmes.

Kouchouk noted that Egypt's private sector raised investments by 73 percent last year. The country's budget debt fell 13 percent over the past two years while external debt dropped by about 4 billion dollars in that period and 1.5 billion dollars this year.

Egypt aims to lower the debt-to-GDP ratio of budget agencies to 78 percent by June 2027 and 70 percent in the medium term.

Egypt's Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk said the government is working to reduce budget sector debt and the overall deficit while maintaining a primary surplus to lower debt servicing costs and create greater fiscal space for human development and social protection. He added that efforts are underway to diversify financing sources with a focus on development financing and the domestic market alongside a gradual reduction in reliance on commercial borrowing.
