Egypt’s Ministry of Local Development and Environment warned that dust-laden winds will affect several regions on May 17 and 18. The alert covers Upper Egypt, the Western Desert and parts of Greater Cairo.
Local Development and Environment Minister Manal Awad said the ministry’s air pollution early warning system, in coordination with the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, expects intermittent declines in air quality and visibility. The effects are likely to be strongest during evening and nighttime hours.
Awad advised elderly people and those with respiratory illnesses or sinus conditions to avoid outdoor activities while winds are strong. The ministry’s central operations room remains on alert to receive complaints and monitor developments. Conditions are expected to improve gradually beginning Monday evening.
