EthSwitch reports record profit and expands digital payments

EthSwitch, Ethiopia's national switch operator, reported a record 1.4 billion birr gross profit for the fiscal year ending June 2025, a 34% increase from last year's 1.06 billion birr. The growth was driven by a sharp rise in interoperable transactions, especially person-to-person transfers. The company also plans to construct a new 12-storey headquarters.

EthSwitch, the national switch operator, reported a record gross profit of 1.4 billion birr for the fiscal year ending June 2025, marking a 34% increase from the previous year's 1.06 billion birr. This performance stemmed from a sharp rise in interoperable transactions, signaling Ethiopia's increasing adoption of digital payments.

Person-to-person (P2P) transfers generated the most revenue at 902.6 million birr, accounting for nearly half of total income, followed by ATM transactions at 825.1 million birr. Overall revenue rose 49% to 2.2 billion birr, with the company processing 287.4 million transactions totaling 741.1 billion birr. P2P transfers grew fastest, surging 158% to 128.3 million transactions worth 577.7 billion birr.

Net profit stood at 1.05 billion birr, while paid-up capital increased to 2.6 billion birr. EthSwitch announced plans to construct a 12-storey headquarters on Equatorial Guinea Street near Casanchis, highlighting its expansion.

Board Chairperson Solomon Desta stated, "the results reaffirm EthSwitch’s pivotal role in enhancing interoperability among financial institutions and advancing the digital payment ecosystem, despite ongoing macroeconomic challenges."
