An explosion from a gas LP leak at La Soldadera restaurant, near the Monumento a la Revolución, caused a fire on the night of October 24, 2025, in Cuauhtémoc borough. Authorities evacuated hundreds without reporting injuries. Firefighters contained the blaze in under an hour.
The incident took place around 20:45 hours on the ground floor of a building in the Tabacalera neighborhood, between Ramos Arispe and Avenida de la República streets, facing Plaza de la República. Webcams de México cameras captured the exact moment of the explosion, which lit up the street and produced a dense column of black smoke as motorists and pedestrians passed through the area.
According to the Secretaría de Gestión Integral de Riesgos y Protección Civil (SGIRPC), the fire started from an ignited leak in a gas LP combustion environmental heater, causing damage to two tables, a tarp, chairs, and accumulated grime in the extraction hood. "In the ground floor of a building where a restaurant is located, an ignited leak in a gas LP combustion environmental heater was registered, followed by a fire," the authorities detailed.
Emergency services, including firefighters, mobilized quickly to control the flames and evacuate the site. Jefe Vulcano reported on X: "#AlMomento We are attending to a fire in a gas container of the air conditioning system at La Soldaderas restaurant. I report that we have extinguished the fire and evacuated 150 people who were at the place. We conducted a tour of the building."
Reports on the number of evacuees vary: SGIRPC indicated 50 people from the restaurant (customers and workers) plus 150 from the building's penthouse, while Mayor Alessandra Rojo de la Vega mentioned approximately 500. The fire was extinguished about an hour later, between 21:34 and 21:59 hours according to sources, with no victims or injuries. Subsequently, two 10 kg LP gas cylinders were cooled, and an inspection was conducted to rule out additional risks.
This event highlights the dangers of gas installations in commercial establishments, though no major consequences were reported.
