Fan detained for throwing hammer at referee in Gimnasia-Vélez match

A Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata fan was detained after throwing a hammer at referee Yael Falcón Pérez during the match against Vélez Sarsfield in the 15th round of the Torneo Clausura. The incident happened at the 33rd minute of the first half, seconds after Marcelo Torres's goal, causing a brief interruption. Though the referee sustained no serious injuries, the event highlights security issues in Argentine stadiums.

The Ministry of Security of the Province of Buenos Aires confirmed the arrest of Franco Suárez, identified as the fan responsible for throwing the hammer at Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo in La Plata on November 10, 2025. The aggressor was tracked using the stadium's camera system, in collaboration with Aprevide and the Buenos Aires Police. At the time of his detention, Suárez was also carrying a flare.

The violent episode occurred at the 33rd minute of the first half, right after Marcelo Torres's goal that gave Gimnasia a 1-0 lead over Vélez. The hammer hit the grass and rebounded into Falcón Pérez's face, causing concern among players and a brief pause in play. Minutes later, a stun bomb exploded near assistant referee Mariana de Almeida, causing no injuries but requiring another interruption.

Despite the incidents, the match continued, and Gimnasia won 2-0 with a second goal from Jeremías Merlo at the 22nd minute of the second half. This victory secured the 'Lobo's' stay in the Primera División and placed them 10th in Zone B with 19 points, close to the playoffs. Suárez faces a contravention charge and possible sanctions such as a ban from stadium entry, once again exposing security shortcomings in Argentine football.

The match, refereed by Yael Falcón Pérez, took place on November 10, 2025, at 5:00 PM in La Plata, with Gimnasia as the home team.
